A recent study found that Indian women are at greater risk of HIV as very few of their male counterparts have knowledge about AIDS. Pointing out Indian women’s failure to negotiate with their counterpart, the report said: "Lacking the power to negotiate safe sex, many young brides may be more vulnerable to HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) than unmarried girls. These young mothers become part of the adult population and may not receive the benefits of efforts that could provide them with needed information and services." More surprisingly, a National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO)’s study revealed that almost 73 per cent of young people carried misconceptions related to modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS. There are 5.2 million HIV infected people living in India, out of which about 39 per cent of them are women, an official estimate said.
