Women’s Equal Participation: Guarantees Human Face Governance

If the world’ established and new democracies are to be truly democratic, half the world’s population cannot be excluded. While the past ten years have seen some modest gains for women in politics, they continue to remain under-represented in decision-making fora, holding less than 16 percent of parliamentary seats worldwide.

Women in Politics seek to shore up different methods and models for enhancing women’s political participation. Increasing the level of female representation and participation in decision-making bodies requires well-developed strategies and information on which measures have worked successfully in different countries with different political systems.

By bridging the gap between academics and practitioners, IDEA aims to provide relevant policy options and data to those working to find solutions to the under-representation of women.

While taking into account a global perspective, it tries to ensure that materials generated also reflect an awareness of and comparison between national, regional and local contexts. IDEA is committed to providing comparative information on how to advance gender and democracy issues in general, and how to promote the participation and representation of women in political life in particular.

Yes, first we need to bring the women into politics and administration and then we can decide who is who.  More important at this stage is increased participation by the women in democratic and administrative process of this country.

More and more women should come out and fight elections.  Although providing quota for women in parliament would help, yet intially we could see proxy candidates from their male counterparts.

Gradually genuine independent women candidates would come up as is happening in the village panchayats.
